John’s Campaign Wins Support from NHS

Carer Support Wiltshire and Observer backed John’s Campaign wins support from the NHS.

A significant milestone has been reached by John’s Campaign, the rapidly growing project to break down institutionalised barriers in the NHS and allow carers of people with dementia who are admitted to hospital to be able to stay with them or visit them at any time. Hospitals across the UK are now set to change their policies to allow better access for carers

Benefit Cap on Full-Time Carers for Adult Relatives to be Scrapped

The government has abandoned its controversial policy of imposing benefit cap penalties on full-time carers for adult relatives, two months after a court found it unlawfully discriminated against disabled people.

The welfare reform minister, Lord Freud, told peers during a debate on the welfare bill on Monday that all those who spend more than 35 hours a week in a caring role would be exempt from the cap.

Heléna Herklots, the chief executive of Carers UK, said: “By changing the law to exempt carers who receive carer’s allowance from the benefit cap, the government has shown that it recognises the valuable contribution that carers make to society and that the benefit cap unfairly penalises carers, many of whom are already facing significant financial hardship as a result of their caring role.”

CSW launches new accreditation programme for employers

Carer Support Wiltshire have launched a new accreditation programme for employers to help local businesses realise the benefits of supporting carers in their workforce.

Working For Carers, which launched this month, will help local companies to future-proof their policies and safeguard the sustainability of their workforce, whilst making life easier for working carers.
