Days out
Time away from your caring role is important. Here at Carer Support Wiltshire we organise days out including cream teas in some of Wiltshire’s prettiest locations and the opportunity to take part in a cookery class. Once you are registered with us we will send you our What’s On Guide full of everything you need to know.
Short Breaks Scheme for children and young people
One of the ways that Wiltshire Council provides short breaks to children and young people 5-18yrs who have special educational needs and/or disabilities is through the Short Breaks Scheme. The scheme allows families to choose a whole range of short break opportunities which are beneficial leisure experiences. This could be riding lessons, trips out or play equipment. For more information email [email protected] or telephone 01225 764647.
Breaks Prescription Scheme
The Breaks Prescription Scheme gives carers the chance to access a free break up to the value of £50 through their local GP surgery.
We recognise that caring can have a negative impact on a carer’s own health so this initiative gives carers the opportunity to take a bit of time for themselves in order to recharge and refresh.
The break can cover anything you feel would give you a bit of time for you. Previous prescriptions have been used for:
- Gym session
- Sports activity
- Complementary therapy
- Hair or beauty appointment
How you can access a break prescription
A break can be prescribed by your GP, Practice Nurse or Health Care Worker who will have a chat with you about how your caring role is affecting you and can fill out a quick form which gets sent back to us in order for you to access your break.
Complementary therapies
Complementary therapies have been proven to help you relax, balance your mind and have a little bit of time just for you, which is why we offer them across Wiltshire every month.
Some of the therapies we offer are:
- Aromatherapy Massage
- Reflexology
- Indian Head Massage
- Reiki
- Manicures
- Facials

Social activities/groups
Support groups & carers cafés
We understand the value of peer-to-peer support so we have groups that meet regularly across the county to provide carers with the chance to get together with other people in similar circumstances for a chat over a drink (and usually a biscuit or two!)
Some of our meetings are for specific groups, e.g. parent carers, mental health carers or young adult carers, but others are open to anyone of any caring background to come along to. Visit our What’s On section to find out one near you.
Interest groups
Sometimes people prefer to come to a group that follows a certain interest to give them a special chance to ‘switch-off’ from the day-to-day.
If that appeals to you; we have several groups which may be of interest:
- Walking Group
- Gardening Group
- Creative Carers
Contact us on 0800 181 4118 to register your interest.
