Malmesbury Mayor Charity Appeal Raises Funds for Carers

September 1, 2016 by Jules Stanbridge Leave a Comment

A cheque for £2,745 was handed to Carer Support Wiltshire as the ex-mayor of Malmesbury’s charity appeal came to an end. Malmesbury Mayor COTY cheque presentation

Ex-mayor John Gundry and ex-mayoress Jacqueline Tong presented the cheque to Catharine Hurford from Carer Support Wiltshire with most of the money raised at the Mayor’s charity blues night in March and the Mayor’s charity cabaret in April.

Cllr Gundry said: “We chose Carer Support Wiltshire because changes in demographics and government policy mean that more and more people - of all ages - are finding themselves caring for relatives. That is often a new and demanding responsibility and Carer Support Wiltshire provides personal help and support to a wide range of unpaid carers.”

“I am very grateful to all who helped with the fundraising or contributed to the appeal,” Cllr Gundry added. He is pictured with Catharine Hurford, ex-mayoress Jacqueline Tong and Claire Mann from Malmesbury Town Council

Thank you to everyone involved in raising this phenomenal amount.

Carer Support Wiltshire relies on the generosity of people to help them fund the projects that make a difference to carers. If you are interested in making us your Charity of the Year we would love to hear from you.

First Aid for the Mind

August 12, 2016 by Jules Stanbridge Leave a Comment

Exam time is a stressful period for most young people, but when you are a young adult carer it can be difficult to combine studying and exams with a caring role.

Being a carer can have a big impact on the things that are important to growing up. A quarter are bullied at school because of their caring role and lose more than one day a month through lateness of absence. Over 44% reported a mental health problem whilst 29% had dropped out of college/university because of their caring role.

Carer Support Wiltshire are running a First Aid for the Mind workshop on Wednesday 24th August to teach young adult carers how to spot the signs and symptoms of poor mental health. They will learn the skills needed to help them manage stress and anxiety when things get tough and they feel unable to cope.

Young adult carers are young people between the ages of 16-25 who provide unpaid care to a family member or friend who is physically or mentally ill, disabled or misuses substances. There are more than 375,000 young adult carers in the UK, although this is believed to be a huge underestimate of the true numbers as many hide their caring role, or do not identify themselves as carers.

If you are aged 16-25 and caring for someone we can offer help and support. Call us and ask to speak to Andrea James.

August 10, 2016 by Jules Stanbridge Leave a Comment

Carer Support Wiltshire is proud to back a new campaign, which aims to persuade more and more employers to open up to part-time and flexible arrangements, from the point of hire. Hire Me My Way is working towards creating a fair job market for all those who can’t work a traditional full time job.
