Viv outside our Salisbury Office
As the nation celebrates Volunteers Week we are delighted to announce that one of our amazing volunteers, Viv Bass has won the Marsh Award for Carers for her volunteering work with Carer Support Wiltshire (CSW). She been named South West regional winner for 2016 in recognition of the level of support and advice that she offers other carers.
As sole carer for her husband before he had to go into a nursing home, Viv, 80 knows more than most about the importance of getting support. When her husband Brian, 81, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease she sought support from CSW and began attending a regular coffee morning run by the charity. She gradually became a volunteer and now helps at one of its carers’ cafés, in Salisbury’s Red Lion. Viv has been volunteering with CSW for 6 years and in the past year has supported carers who have become isolated and lonely in their caring role with regular phone calls. She also attends Salisbury District Hospital Carer Café to welcome and give advice to carers who have been identified by the hospital.
Viv was delighted to win the award and hope it inspires others to give volunteering a try.
“I hope this award will encourage more volunteers. It can be lonely and isolating being a carer and any extra help and support from a volunteer is usually welcomed with open arms.”
The Carers Trust and the Marsh Christian Trust, Marsh Award for Carers is an opportunity to give back to carers or former carers who have contributed to supporting other carers in their community. Viv will be presented with a cheque for £250.
